What is it like to be a small content creator on Instagram in 2021? In one word… disheartening. The Instagram algorithm favours large accounts such as celebrities and creators with millions of followers, leaving smaller accounts fighting to be seen. This is a real frustration when we put hours of work into our content, and it goes completely unnoticed.
If you follow some content creators with a smaller following, there are a few small things that you can do to help them…
Leave real comments
Did you know that Instagram doesn’t count comments with less than four words as real engagement? That means that leaving short comments such as “Beautiful” or “Gorgeous” doesn’t help creators. If you take a couple of extra seconds to leave a comment with more than four words, this will help the creator rank better in the algorithm. Most of us end our captions with a question, so if you’re stuck for what to comment then just answer that!
Save their posts
If you create an album in your saved items specifically to save your favourite creators posts to, that can give them a real boost in the way the algorithm sees them. It shows Instagram that you find their content particularly interesting, which means that Instagram will then push it out to more people. Essentially I think of this as giving a post a “super like”!
Share their content
This doesn’t mean that you have to post every one of their pictures to your story, we really don’t expect that of you! It just means that if you see a post that you think a friend might like, then send it to them. This shows the algorithm that you enjoy the content so much that you want other people to see it.
Turn on post notifications
If a post does well in the first hour, it’s more likely to be successful overall. By turning on post notifications for your favourite content creators, it means that you will probably see their posts sooner than you would ordinarily. The sooner you see and interact with their posts, the better ranking they will be given by the algorithm.
If you take a few extra minutes to engage with content in the ways I’ve suggested, it can make a massive difference to the creator. Give me a shout if you have any more questions on how best to help your favourite content creators on Instagram, and have a wonderful day!
