It’s officially the best time of the year… Strictly has returned to our weekends! I was so worried that with the Coronavirus it wouldn’t be going ahead this year, but the BBC have pulled out all the stops to make sure we still get our fill of glitz, glam, and fake tan.
On Saturday, we met all of our 2020 celebrities and saw them being partnered up with their pros, as well as getting a preview of what’s to come in the form of a group dance. This year I wanted to go through the line up and make some predictions of how each couple will fare in the competition. First things first: I am not a dancer. I have absolutely no dance knowledge, but I’ve been watching Strictly for as long as I can remember and have a good level of enthusiasm for reality TV shows!
Clara Amfo and Aljaž Škorjanec
I am so excited about this partnership! Clara is one of the few celebrities that I knew of prior to the show, and she’s a Radio 1 DJ – so as with everyone with a musical background, hopefully she should have a good sense of rhythm to help with the dancing. Judging from the short clips we saw of the pair in the group dance, I’d guess that Clara and Aljaž will make it at least as far as the quarter finals.
Ranvir Singh and Giovanni Pernice
From watching them in the group dance, I don’t have particularly high hopes for Ranvir and Giovanni. Maybe she will surprise me with a bit more training, but right now I’d guess that Ranvir will make it to week three or four.
HRVY and Janette Manrara
Judging from the group dance, I feel like this guy might be Joe Sugg 2.0 in the sense that no one really knows who he is yet, he looks like he’s 12, but will probably end up being a really good dancer. Seriously though, what’s with the lack of vowels?
Jason Bell and Luba Mushtuk
Speaking of reincarnations of contestants past, I think that Jason Bell might be the next Kelvin Fletcher. He doesn’t really look like a dancer, but judging from what we saw in the group dance I think he might be a dark horse in the competition. However, as an American there’s a good possibility he might not get the same amount of votes.
Jacqui Smith and Anton Du Beke
I really feel like this partnership speaks for itself. My prediction is that Jacqui and Anton will be voted out at the first possible opportunity. Please.
Nicola Adams and Katya Jones
I am so excited about these two! Nicola and Katya are Strictly’s first same-sex couple, which is super exciting. For some reason I get the feeling that Nicola won’t be a natural dancer, however as a boxer she should be relatively agile and light on her feet. My guess is that these two will make it to the middle stages of the competition, if not a bit further.
Maisie Smith and Gorka Marquez
Maisie Smith is this year’s youngest contestant, and there’s a bit of controversy as to whether she has had previous dancing experience as she starred in – and won – the 2019 Christmas Special. Personally I don’t see that as a big issue considering the Christmas Special contestants are only training for a few weeks and don’t learn more than one dance. Judging from the group dance, I think this pairing has a lot of potential and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them in the quarter finals or further.
JJ Chalmers and Amy Dowden
I’m really rooting for these two because I’m still bitter about Amy and Karim losing the Glitter Ball last year. From watching the group dance, I wouldn’t particularly say that they stood out as the best or the worst – so my prediction is that JJ and Amy will get to at least the middle of the competition, and maybe a little further.
Bill Bailey and Oti Mabuse
I don’t know what it is about him, but I just don’t like this dude. However he definitely surprised me with his enthusiasm and agility in the group dance. As for predictions, I’m going to say that Bill and Oti will last until week four.
Max George and Dianne Buswell
As with Amy and JJ, I really want this partnership to do well due to Dianne and Dev being voted out way too early last year. In general, boyband members seem to do very well in Strictly – for example Max’s fellow band member Jay McGuiness who won back in 2015. I’d give these two pretty good odds for getting to at least the midway point of the competition.
Caroline Quentin and Johannes Radebe
I did not have high hopes for Caroline Quentin, and I still don’t. However she definitely did better than I expected in the group dance. That said, I don’t think that this pair will last past week three.
Jamie Laing and Karen Hauer
For those of you who don’t know, Jamie Laing was supposed to take part in Strictly last year but he got injured in the first group dance and was replaced by Kelvin who then went on to win. Hopefully this will be second time lucky, as he didn’t appear to injure himself in the 2020 debut! I would guess that Jamie and Karen will probably make it to week five or six. They won’t be the first to go, but I can’t see them lasting until the later stages of the competition.
Those are all my predictions for the couples taking part in Strictly Come Dancing 2020! As I said before, I am most definitely not a dance expert so take my opinions with a pinch of salt. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this years line up!
